Last night – depsite the absence of many of our top players – the Lions managed an emphatic 6-2 win against neighbouring Muswell Hill.
Hendon took the lead within an hour when Cristian capitalised on an uncharacteristic mistake from his strong opponent, and Tim’s game ended in a draw.
The rest of the games were very hard-fought and lasted the duration of the match. First Gary and then Tomer won the exchange in complex positions, both managing to finally secure the win. Ravi was in charge from the middlegame, and made no mistake in a favourable endgame.
Simon again showed great resilience to defend a rook and minor piece ending a pawn down,. Dan also put up a great fight to create counterchances in the ending, but to no avail.
The last game to finish was on top board, where Marcos had sacrificed a piece to go for a win against his very strong opponent, eventually outplaying him in a queen ending to seal the victory.
