The 75th Anniversary Club Championship drew to a close last night. We congratulate our new champions David Amior, Samuel Tombs and JC Sartenaer, who won the tournament jointly with 4½/6!
Congratulations also to Barry David and Faye Ainscow, who jointly win the David Jones trophy for the best score by a player rated under 1675, scoring 3½/6!
Had either David or JC won the crucial game on top board, they would have won the Championship outright. The game looked an exciting one, with attacks on opposite wings, befitting the uncompromising and aggressive style of both players; however, the game eventually ended in a draw, making a tie for first place inevitable.
They were joined by Samuel Tombs, who defeated Faye with the Black pieces. The tie for first place could have been larger had any of Salvatore, Alex Funk or I won our games, but we all drew. My own game with Salvatore was the very last to finish; I had a very good position at one stage but, low on time, I did not manage to convert it.
(In previous years we have had tie breaks to determine the trophy winner; however, this year we did not specify a tie break in the rules published before the tournament, so we are not applying one.)
Many thanks to everyone who played; thanks also to arbiter Adam Raoof for organising! It was a great tournament, and a fitting way to return to an over-the-board Club Championship after two years of being forced online by COVID-19!
