Match report by Michael Bennett

Last night the Lions overcame a challenge from visitors Muswell Hill, coming out 5.5.-2.5 winners.

Despite large grade differences, the visitors’ hastily-recruited team put up a great fight in a tough match:

  • A smooth win from GM Tamás Fodor on his Hendon debut offset an uncharacteristic early defeat for Cristian (1-1).
  • The match seemed level for a long time after that, but then attacking wins from Adam and Lorin took us to 3-1, and Duncan’s opponent went wrong under time pressure (4-1).
  • Victory was sealed when Tomer Eden neatly converted an opposite-coloured bishops ending and Jonathan Hawkins agreed a draw on top board (5.5-1.5).
  • Last to finish was Board 7, where Dan’s opponent played really well to finish the match with the visitors’ second win.

Congratulations to the whole team for a hard-fought victory!

This victory means the Lions close the gap on the Tigers at the top of the Division 1 table, with 3 matches in hand.
