Match report by Michael Bennett
The first of our two annual Lions v Tigers matches took place last night. A hard-fought struggle with stiff resistance put up by all the Tigers eventually ended in a 5.5-2.5 victory for the Lions.
Games in brief:
- John was pressing for a win in the ending against new recruit Laszlo, but somehow lost a pawn followed by the exchange, after which Laszlo converted with the exemplary technique one would expect from Julian Mészáros’ students!
- Cristian gradually outplayed Joseph in a classic Ruy Lopez structure
- Tim – who beat IM Richard Bates at the weekend! – blundered in time trouble after standing very well against Peter.
- Tomer eventually overcame Jon’s resistance in a rook and minor piece ending.
- After an improvised opening, I ran short of time and agreed a draw in a position with opposite sides castling that was dynamically even.
- Adam reported he was happy to draw against Sacha considering how the game went.
- Oren’s sacrifices gave him some pressure, but were eventually defused by Salvatore.
- David and Kish were last to finish, as Kish calmly defended a minor piece ending 2 pawns down to split the point.
Many thanks to all who turned out, and we look forward to more of the same next week!
