Lalic wins Ten-Round Megablitz

Thursday 10 March, 2011

On 10th March 2011, Grandmaster Bogdan Lalic won the Hendon Chess Club Ten-Round Megablitz. This special event was held in the Big Hall at our usual venue. The tournament was open to all-comers, with 10 rounds of 5-minute blitz chess. First prize was £100.

Mini-report by Phil Makepeace

Great event and enormously strong. My 185 grade was only good enough for about 10th seed out of 30. Hopefully, with more notice, 50+ will turn up next time.

Top placings:

  • 1st: Lalic GM 9/10 (£100)
  • 2nd: Cherniaev GM 8/10
  • 3rd=: Georghiou, Makepeace 7½/10
  • 5th: Fry 6½/10

The top 5 just took points off each other throughout, leading to some massive downfloats after the pairings between us had been exhausted.

In addition to the above, Georghiou also drew with Tryfon Gavriel in Round 10, while Charlie Fry drew with Cristian Mures and Anthony Kent.

Organiser Adam Raoof says:

Thanks to the 30 players who made it through 10 rounds!
